SO WHAT'S WITH THE CRAZY "Z"?

Corner Stone at Spencer, Indiana First Church of the Nazarene
Sometime in 1921 or early 1922 the First Church of the Nazarene in Spencer, Indiana ordered a corner stone for their new building.  Now 90 years later it still reflects a part of the history of this fine church.

Problem is for some reason that "Z" in Nazarene is crooked.  While holding revival here this week I asked the congregation; "Why?"  No one had a clue.  No one was in service who was there in 1922 when the engraved stone was ordered.  No one knew what quarry it came from.  No one knew anything.

It seems to me that are really only two options.  Either it was ordered that way or someone doing the carving messed up.  Either way, I am sure it must have been a heavy topic of discussion for years to follow.  I can only imagine the reactions there must have been if it were a "GOOF UP".  Even if it were done on purpose to make a lasting statement of some sort, I am sure there were members who thought it foolish.  There may have even been folks who left the church over it.  Then again, maybe no one cared.
The point is it just isn't important anywhere.

Every church has its' "crooked z" and in the moment it seemed so important, so critical.  Yet, most of the time, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 years from now no one will remember what the deal was.  In our humanity we imagine ourselves and our issues to be "memorable" and we create a battlefield when there isn't even a war.  Many a church "war" started over something that today no one can remember.

Congratulations to the Spencer First Church of the Nazarene who survived the crazy "Z" in 1922 and now 90 years later continue to be a light on the square in downtown Spencer.

Will anyone 90 years from now (should the Lord tarry) remember the fall revival of 2011?  No they won't.  They won't know who sing the specials or preached the messages.  But hopefully the principles learned and actions taken because of our time together will make a difference in the lives of many to come.  After all, it is not about us.  It is about HIM and the best is yet to come!
